Voices Magazine
Spring 2020

Every year, Pacific Oaks College publishes an issue of their alumni magazine, Voices. The Spring 2020 issue was special, as it was Pacific Oaks's 75th anniversary! Melissa Banks designed the special edition cover, which had a silver foil treatment on a soft touch cover stock.

I contributed by designing the fourth feature "A Life in 3-D" and the front of the book.

The article, A Life in 3-D, was about a Pacific Oaks student who found himself and flourished throughout his time at PO. I kept the pink from the trees in his photo as the main color, which worked beautifully with the green in the photo. He has tattoo sleeves, and in this photo, his chrysanthemum tattoo was on display. As a lover of tattoos, and to show more of his personality, I used that flower as a motif throughout the piece. I hand-drew two chrysanthemums, one at the beginning of the story which was more closed off, and one at the end, beautifully and fully bloomed. I felt that this was a beautiful metaphor for the story he told throughout the article. I also drew small sprigs of lavender for the line breaks to keep the hand-drawn style throughout the piece.
