The Chicago School
INSIGHT Winter 2023
The Chicago School of releases INSIGHT Magazine annually. The magazine revolves around many different issues in the psychology field, with this year's main feature being about creating safer communities.
The cover feature is The Safer Communities [Pact]. This piece is about how new mental health legislation has been passed, but how it will require collaboration between experts and community members.
The design of this piece uses leaves of a tree to connect the main image of the girl to the rest of the spreads. INSIGHT's color palette uses darker muted tones, so having a light olive green overlay helps blend the design into the rest of the magazine's color palette. A blue is used throughout to convey the feeling of safety, and is used in the sidebars to separate them from the features.
The second feature, Immediate Jeopardy, is about Roe v. Wade being overturned and how that affects the mental health of women and AFAB people.
I wanted to play with "typical" gender colors in this piece, so I used a blue background where the pink tones pop more. The main art in the piece is a gender neutral person with all of the pieces are inside the person. It's meant to represent all that is going on throughout everyone who's affected by this overturning. A bold font is used for the pull quotes to show the strength that these people have in fighting for their reproductive rights.
The last feature is The Uses of Grief. This piece talks about the history of the Naomi Ruth Cohen Institute (NRCI), and how they help fight for mental health education.
Because this piece focuses on the grief of the Cohen family, and how they've used that to push further mental health education, I kept the piece dart. The only color used purposefully is a light blue, which is one of NRCI's brand colors. The photos used are from their annual conference, and I used them to help portray the serious nature of this topic. I wanted the piece to feel serious, but showcase the family's dedication to mental health education.
